Quick Facts

The #1 Cause Of Outs In Baseball

Ask yourself, how many times have you or your kids hit a weak ground ball or struck out when swinging at the outside pitch? Pulling off the baseball is common all the way from little league to the big leagues.

Flying open too early with your front shoulder is a guaranteed batting average killer! The best and fastest way to improve your game day baseball swing is to let the baseball travel deeper in the contact zone and work on hitting the baseball up the middle.

Hitting Tips: How to Stop Pulling Off the Baseball

  • Hitting Approach: The best way to deal with flying open is to practice the best game day hitting approach of hitting to the opposite field.
  • See and track the baseball: When you close your mind and open your eyes at the plate you’ll improve your game day timing. Stay relaxed in the batter’s box, focus on breathing, clear your mind and watch the ball out of the pitcher’s hand.
  • Focus on your core: the core engine room for your baseball swing. Relax your upper body and allow your core to take over your swing and avoid swinging with your arms.
  • Build your confidence: Train hitting drills to improve your game-day confidence and learn how to hit in pressure situations.
  • Swing adjustments. You’re ability to make swing adjustments during batting practice will improve your game day hitting.

How The Core Controls Back Foot Rotation

Your back foot is one of the best indicators for your baseball swing

  • It’s vital you rotate your back foot from your hips. Don’t try to rotate your back foot from your knee.
  • If you’re slow with your back foot rotation the rest of your baseball swing will be slow.
  • Back foot rotation will allow your upper body to get into the best place to hit for power.
  • Prevents pulling off the ball, dipping and spinning off the ball: Too much weight on your back foot at contact will trigger pulling off the ball as your shoulders dip and you spin-off the baseball before contact. Consequently, you’ll swing and miss, pop up or hit a weak ground ball.

Summary

  • Flying open triggers your head to move as you lose sight of the ball. One of the most well known phrases in baseball is “you can’t hit what you can’t see”.
  • Flying open causes your bat head to drop, resulting in a pop up, foul ball, weak ground ball or striking out.
  • Pulling out too early of your swing reduces your chances of hitting the baseball for power, triggering you to hit the baseball with top spin as apposed to back spin.
  • Pulling off your swing reduces your ability to react to late movement on the slider, cutter or change up pitches.
  • Lunging: Lunging is caused by your lack of confidence in your bat speed, triggering your to compensate by reaching for the ball. It’s vital you’re not afraid to let the baseball travel deep in the hitting zone before making your decision to swing, especially with late breaking pitches such as the low-and-away slider.
  • Bad Hitting approach: Over-swinging or trying to pull the baseball will trigger flying open. The fastest way to fix bad swing habits and to improve your batting average is to stay relaxed, don’t over-swing and focus on hitting the ball up the middle or to the opposite side of the field.
  • Rolling Over: The number one cause of weak ground ball outs is triggered by rolling your top hand (controlled from the forearm) before you make contact with the baseball. Rolling over is especially common when swinging at the outside pitch. Top-Hand Heavy Bat Laser Toss is the best drill to prevent you from rolling and improve power.
  • Confidence: Your sub conscious mind plays a powerful role when you hit.  Lacking confidence will cause you to rush your swing, fly open to early with your front shoulder and to lunge at the baseball. Improved game day performance comes from confidence. To improve confidence you need to practice game day specific hitting drills.
  • Tracking the baseball: Failure to see the baseball out of the pitcher’s hand, triggers rushing and lunging at the baseball.
  • Nervousness: Nervousness in the batters’ box will slow your bat speed and trigger the common hitting mistake of jumping out at the ball.
  • Front Foot Stride: Lack of confidence to hit a fastball can result in rushing your stride and trigger your front foot to plant open (big toe pointing at the pitcher).
The best and fastest way to improve your game day baseball swing is to let the baseball travel deeper in the contact zone and work on hitting the baseball up the middle

Your back foot is one of the best indicators for your baseball swing. It’s vital you rotate your back foot from your hips, if you’re lazy with your back foot rotation the rest of your baseball swing will break down

If a hitter can get into a good lower half position then this will have a positive influence on the upper half of the body and the overall swing
